Volkswagen changes its naming strategy

Volkswagen has launched a new naming strategy for its electric vehicles. The brand has named the production version of the ID.2all concept the ID.Polo. This new approach marks the first time an electric GTI model is on the road.

This car is named the ID.Polo GTI. Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schäfer stated, “Our model names are firmly ingrained in people’s minds. They symbolize quality, timeless design, and technologies. That’s why we are carrying our familiar names into the future. ID.Polo is just the beginning.” This announcement suggests that familiar model names like the ID.Tiguan will also be adapted for electric vehicles with the “ID.” prefix in the future.

The company showcased camouflaged ID.Polo and ID.Polo GTI prototypes at the IAA Mobility 2025 in Munich. These models provided the first hints of the cars, which will hit the road in 2026. The production versions remain largely faithful to the previously unveiled ID.2all and ID.2 GTI concepts.

The design maintains Volkswagen’s characteristic simplicity. The GTI version features sporty touches such as larger and more detailed wheels, flared fenders, special bumpers, and a rear spoiler.

The ID. Polo is built on the MEB Entry platform, developed exclusively for electric vehicles. The car measures 4,053 mm in length, 1,816 mm in width, and 1,530 mm in height. The vehicle is single-motor and front-wheel drive. The GTI version is expected to produce 223 horsepower. There are even rumors of a more performance-oriented “Clubsport” version.

The ID. Polo is planned to go on sale in Europe in early 2026 with a price below €25,000. Also unveiled at the same show was the ID. Cross concept, a compact electric SUV. This model, the electric counterpart to the T-Cross, will be released at the end of 2026.
