In 2020, the first year of Europe’s new emission regulations, automotive giants like Volkswagen and Jaguar Land Rover faced the financial consequences of missing their CO2 emission targets.
Volkswagen pays a heavy price for missing CO2 targets
Companies that failed to meet their CO2 emission targets ended up paying a total of $552 million in fines. These penalties are seen as a result of strict policies applied against automobile manufacturers who fail to meet emission targets.
Volkswagen disclosed that it missed its 2020 targets by 0.75 grams/km, resulting in a fine of $106 million. Similarly, Jaguar Land Rover missed its targets by 3 grams/km and had to pay a fine of $43.5 million.
Along with Volkswagen, other car manufacturers like Suzuki and Subaru also faced significant fines. Notably, Suzuki had to pay about 1,000 Euros per vehicle due to a target deviation of 10.4 grams/km, totaling 160 million Euros in fines.
Subaru paid a total of 52 million Euros in fines for 16,176 vehicles with a deviation of 34 grams. This situation has prompted automakers to develop new strategies. Many companies formed CO2 emission pools with other brands to minimize fines.
For example, Jaguar Land Rover and Honda managed to reduce their penalties by forming a pool with Tesla, which has low CO2 emission rates. Thanks to these and similar strategies, the total amount of fines paid in 2021 was reduced to 10 million Euros.
