Volkswagen ID.4 production stopped: Door opens automatically

Ana sayfa / News

Volkswagen has decided to temporarily halt production of its ID.4 electric SUV in the United States due to a safety issue. Production at its Chattanooga, Tennessee plant has been halted due to water-resistant door handles. The vehicle’s door handles are not sufficiently water-resistant, allowing moisture to seep into the door control circuitry, causing the doors to open accidentally while the vehicle is in motion. This poses a serious safety risk.

First of all, let’s note that this problem affects approximately 100 thousand ID.4 models produced between 2021 and 2024. Volkswagen will issue a series of recalls to fix the problem. Although production has been stopped, the brand’s officials are still looking for a way to manage this situation.

Until the issue is resolved, around 200 employees at the plant have been temporarily furloughed and will continue to receive 80 percent of their wages, along with unemployment benefits. Volkswagen’s resolution of the situation is also being closely monitored by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Authorities have launched a detailed investigation into this safety risk. Fortunately, no accidents or injuries have been reported so far. However, experts say this is an issue that the brand should handle with great care.

Volkswagen plans to recall all vehicles to fix the problem and offer customers a quick fix. The brand has yet to provide clear information on how this bug will affect the popularity and reliability of the ID.4, but it may need to do some serious work to regain consumer trust.
