Volkswagen Up has been removed from production
The VW Up is the latest car to face production problems. It will now only be available to buy from dealer stock in the UK.
Volkswagen’s smallest model, the Up follows in the footsteps of the Volkswagen Golf, Passat and Beetle, all of which have been discontinued in recent years. Also known as the company’s cheapest model, the VW Up is only 12 years old.
It was produced in a variety of powertrains, from the powerful GTI model to the environmentally friendly e-UP, albeit with a short circulation compared to other models already lost. At the beginning of the year, Volkswagen removed the Up GTI version from sale, stating that demand exceeded supply but that they would produce all existing orders.
With this move, the VW Polo regained its title as the company’s smallest car. It’s a similar story in the auto industry as manufacturers shift their focus from internal combustion models to electric powertrains.
The discontinuation of the Ford Fiesta earlier this year marks the end of a decades-long legend by another name. It is estimated that companies will focus on models that they can produce on a single platform.
