VW California 1.5 eHybrid 4Motion brings hybrid drive to campers

Ana sayfa / Cars

The VW California 1.5 eHybrid 4Motion (2025) takes the brand’s classic camper van formula and injects it with modern tech, including a plug-in hybrid drivetrain and all-wheel drive. Built on the MQB-evo platform, it offers improved efficiency, flexible living space, and a taste of sustainable travel.

At its core, the California pairs a 1.5-liter turbo gasoline engine producing 177 hp (130 kW) with two electric motors, one for each axle. Together, the system delivers 245 hp (180 kW) and 350 Nm of torque. Power flows through a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission.

On electric power alone, the van can reach up to 59 miles (95 km), though real-world figures hover closer to 50 miles (80 km). Weighing about 2,567 kg and stretching 5.17 meters long, the camper balances performance with practicality.

VW stays true to the California spirit with a pop-up roof, extendable table, and a compact kitchenette featuring a single-burner gas stove and sink. Sleeping arrangements include a 1.06 m lower bed and a 1.14 m upper bed.

The cabin also gains modern touches like app-controlled roof adjustments and auxiliary air conditioning. Two sliding doors improve access, while lightweight individual seats create more storage space.

The plug-in hybrid setup introduces new possibilities but trims the payload. Compared to the diesel version’s 634 kg, the eHybrid carries just 383 kg, something families planning long trips will notice. Its electric range suits short commutes or weekend getaways more than extended expeditions.

Still, features like electric cooling, modular seating, and increased storage capacity make it a compelling choice for eco-conscious campers.

The VW California 1.5 eHybrid 4Motion bridges nostalgia and innovation. It doesn’t escape trade-offs, but for those who want classic camper charm paired with hybrid efficiency, it’s a sign that the future of van life is charging forward.
