Reports have recently emerged that Apple is in the early phases of designing an Apple Silicon-powered iMac that boasts a larger than 30-inch screen. However, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, this innovative machine will not make its market debut until late 2024 at the earliest.
Apple’s experimentation with 32-inch iMac
Apple’s endeavours into developing a 32-inch iMac are presently in a state of experimentation, given the novelty of the project. Gurman postulates that the computer won’t launch before the end of 2024, possibly even later due to its early development stage. This speculation arrives a few years following Apple’s plans to unveil a larger version of the 24-inch M1 iMac.
The anticipated M3 chip-based 24-inch iMac
Interestingly, Gurman reveals that Apple is concurrently working on a fresh iteration of the 24-inch iMac. This version, expected to grace the market “early next year,” will be powered by an M3 chip, making it among the inaugural M3-based Apple devices. It’s been over two years since the complete revamp of the 24-inch iMac with the M1 chip, which has not received an upgrade since then.
Apple’s perspective on larger-screened iMac
It’s fascinating how Apple doesn’t appear pressured to roll out a bigger version of the iMac powered by Apple Silicon. Such a device could potentially serve as a successor to the now-discontinued iMac Pro line.
The tech giant seems to perceive a larger-screened iMac variant as redundant. For the first time in a long while, Apple is selling two adaptable and powerful desktop Macs—the Mac Mini and the Mac Studio—that can be paired with any external display. Additionally, they are retailing a consumer-grade external display, the Studio Display, for the first time since discontinuing the Thunderbolt Display in 2016.
Advantages of a modular setup
Opting for a modular setup, such as coupling the Studio Display with the Mac Studio or the Mac Mini, has numerous benefits. The primary advantage lies in its modularity, which allows for the replacement of the Mac without necessitating the discarding of the display, or vice versa.
As we wait for further development and potential launch of the 32-inch iMac, what are your thoughts, dear readers? Do you think there’s a need for a larger iMac, or do you agree with Apple’s current strategy? Please share your views in the comment section below!
