Xiaomi’s 17 series, set to be unveiled at the end of September, has become the center of controversy even before its release. Company President Lu Weibing, in a statement on social media platform Weibo, strongly denied allegations that the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max’s camera design and naming were inspired by Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro Max. Weibing stated that the design was inspired by the Mi 11 Ultra, released in 2021, and maintains that Xiaomi is maintaining its own style.
Interesting Accusation About the Xiaomi 17
The term “Pro Max” in the device’s name has also been the subject of criticism. Weibing stated that Xiaomi skipped the 16 series and went straight to the 17, not to draw a direct parallel to the iPhone, but to reflect the major leap in the series.
Weibing also emphasized the company’s interest in the number 7, citing product names like SU7 and YU7, stating that this choice is consistent with its brand strategy. He also confirmed that there will be no ultra-thin Air model.
The Xiaomi 17 series will reportedly be the first phones to launch with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, which will be unveiled on September 23rd. It was also confirmed that Xiaomi has signed a temporary exclusivity agreement for this chip, and that it will not be available in other brands until October. It was announced that the series will go on sale in China before October 1st.
The rear display of the new series is another notable innovation. Lu Weibing stated that an investment of approximately 1 billion yuan was made for this display. In addition to functions such as call management, music control, viewing travel information, and a countdown timer, the rear display also offers the ability to use the rear cameras as a viewfinder for selfies. This allows for much higher-quality selfies with the main cameras.
