The remote working model, which was adopted in many companies with the pandemic, had become especially popular among technology sector employees. However, recently, the winds of returning to the office have started to blow among giant technology companies. However, the remote working model is still popular in the sector.
Remote working rate is above 90 per cent
Last year, Amazon’s CEO Andy Jassy demanded that employees work from the office at least three days a week. By 2025, this rule will be further tightened and more than 300,000 employees worldwide will have to return to the office five days a week. Nevertheless, this trend does not seem to be at a level that will affect the general trend.
However, this decision is not common among technology giants. According to Flex Index data, only 3 per cent of technology companies with more than 25 thousand employees apply the five-day office working rule. Most companies give flexibility to their employees by adopting a hybrid model.
Large companies such as Apple, Google and Meta require a minimum of three days in the office, but these policies are constantly changing and face a huge backlash from employees.
However, it remains to be seen how Amazon’s strategy will be received by other large companies. While some CEOs believe that a return to the office is necessary, others see the hybrid working order as a competitive advantage. Prithwiraj Choudhury of Harvard Business School warned that mandatory office policies can lead to losing the most talented employees.
As a result, we can say that the post-pandemic working order is still not fully shaped and the decisions taken by large companies are closely followed by other employers. If Amazon’s decision is successful, it is rumoured that more companies may make returning to the office mandatory.
