WhatsApp will soon compete with Zoom through an upcoming update, which allows for voice and video calls on the web. The app aims to attract corporate companies with this new update that covers audio and video conversations. Currently, up to 8 people can join voice and video calls simultaneously, but Meta is looking to increase this number.
Support for up to 32 people!
With the new update coming to WhatsApp Web, the app will allow for conversations with up to 32 people at once. As a result, a group organizing online meetings can connect directly through WhatsApp instead of using platforms like Zoom.
Meta officials also claim that the confusion of entering meetings will be eliminated. The statement explains that platforms like Zoom require a constant login with an email address, making the user experience more difficult, whereas WhatsApp already has access to your entire contact list, making it easy to enter meetings.
Empowering WhatsApp group admins
The app is expected to receive the new update within a few days. This update will bring a brand-new interface to the WhatsApp application installed on our computers. This interface will closely resemble the WhatsApp app on our phones, making it easier to use the video calling feature.
In addition, the upcoming update will also improve the app’s optimization. As a result, the app will launch faster on Windows devices, and video call-related issues will be minimized.
This update may not seem like much compared to Zoom, which can host 100 participants in a meeting. However, the company indicates that it plans to increase the limit of people the app can accommodate in group calls. In time, WhatsApp will become a competitor to Zoom, albeit through a slower and more gradual process.
Moreover, statements made in Meta forums indicate that WhatsApp is not afraid to increase the group size for meetings and will do so gradually in the future. Based on the announcements and updates, it seems WhatsApp is really committed to this goal.
However, Zoom offers more than just video calling. The app also provides features like screen sharing and subtitles. It is not yet clear whether WhatsApp will offer such support, as there is no official statement on this matter.
