Group video call feature for 32 participants with WhatsApp update
Last year, WhatsApp introduced the screen sharing feature for video calls. Now, this feature has been further enhanced. You can now share audio while sharing your screen. Think about it: you can watch a video with your friends at the same time or give a presentation to your colleagues. This feature will be especially useful during remote work or education.
You can now make video calls with up to 32 participants simultaneously. Previously, this limit was 32 participants only for mobile devices, while Windows and macOS users were limited to 16 and 8 participants, respectively. With this expanded participation feature, it will be much easier to get together with large family gatherings or large groups of friends.
Among the new features with the WhatsApp update is an automatic speaker highlighting feature. With this feature, the person speaking will be prominently displayed on the screen, making it easier for other participants to see the speaker clearly. This will be particularly helpful in crowded calls to understand who is talking.
Additionally, WhatsApp’s parent company Meta has introduced the new Meta Low Bitrate (MLow) codec. This codec provides high-quality audio even on low network connections. Offering twice the audio quality compared to the previously used Opus codec while consuming 10% less processor power, this new codec was already being used in Instagram and Messenger calls. Now it is coming to WhatsApp.
