WhatsApp is discontinuing its Windows app

Ana sayfa / News

WhatsApp is discontinuing its native app for Windows. The changes, conducted by Meta, will now run exclusively on a web-based version of the desktop app using the Edge WebView2 framework. The new architecture reveals that WhatsApp is no longer a traditional native app, but rather a web-based version running on the desktop.

The change creates significant differences in the experience WhatsApp offers Windows users. The app interface is becoming simpler, reducing integration with the system. RAM usage is increasing compared to the native app. The notification system is more limited, and the settings menu is simpler than previous versions. Furthermore, the new version is no longer compatible with Windows 11’s modern user interface.

WhatsApp’s previous native app for Windows was developed with WinUI technology and offered a directly integrated experience. The new version eliminates these advantages.

Because the technical infrastructure is now largely browser-based, the app’s deep connection to the system is weakened. Some familiar features, such as desktop notifications, window behaviors, and quick settings access, are lost with this transition.

Meta claims that the new structure offers advantages in some ways. Features like Channels, Communities, and Status become more functional with the new beta version. Additionally, providing updates to both web and desktop platforms from a single codebase simplifies the development and maintenance process. This model is said to be more sustainable and cost-effective.

However, this change appears to lag behind previous versions in terms of performance and user experience. Meta has frequently highlighted the reliability, speed, and productivity advantages of native Windows and macOS apps in the past. This departure from this approach now represents a functional regression, especially for users who use WhatsApp extensively on desktop.
