Google has announced that it will switch to a QR code system instead of verification codes sent via SMS, making a significant change to Gmail’s authentication system. The new feature will work similarly to the login method on WhatsApp Web.

Gmail users will be able to log in to their accounts by scanning the QR code that appears on the screen with their smartphone’s camera. This innovation will both increase the level of security and make the user experience more practical. Users will not need to manually enter six-digit codes.
Google emphasized that this system will increase security. According to the company’s statements, SMS-based authentication methods carry various security risks. Hackers can access users’ login information by intercepting SMS messages or using phishing methods. Using QR codes offers a more secure alternative against such attacks.
The QR code authentication system is one of Google’s latest steps to make users’ accounts more secure. The company has previously made two-step verification methods mandatory for account security and offered users additional security layers.
The new QR code authentication method is currently being tested by select testers. Google will determine when the system will be widely available after evaluating user feedback. The feature is planned to be rolled out gradually over the coming months. The update will continue to be tested in select regions before being rolled out to all Gmail users.
