WhatsApp may be bringing unexpected support to the platform. In an upcoming change, users will be able to see messages from other chat apps directly in the WhatsApp interface. Third-party message support for WhatsApp is currently being tested in the beta program.
WhatsApp Third Party Message Support Coming Soon
Third-party message support has been spotted in a new section of the WhatsApp Beta interface for Android. Although not currently available, the fact that it includes the title “Third Party Chats” indicates the platform’s intentions.
This will allow WhatsApp to integrate with messaging services outside its own ecosystem. You’ll be able to see your messages from apps like Facebook Messenger, Google Messages and even Telegram in this section. However, it is unclear whether it will allow you to reply.
While the new feature is remarkable, it seems to be the result of European Union regulations. Meta has been designated as a monopoly company under the Digital Markets Act (DMA). This has opened the door for their platform to be more integrated with other apps.
Allowing third-party chats on WhatsApp is likely to play an important role in fulfilling Meta’s obligations under the DMA.
There are some important questions about how third-party message integration will work in WhatsApp. As an end-to-end encrypted service, it is unclear how it will offer the same protections as other apps. There is also the possibility that this feature will only be available in the EU.
