Following Apple’s introduction of the M4 chip in the iPad Pro, it’s now rumored that the first product with the M5 chip will be an iPad Pro. There are even strong rumors that Apple’s new Vision Pro headset may also feature the M5 chip. What about the Mac family? It’s a matter of curiosity which model will make the switch to the M5 first. Here are the details.
2026 Targeted for MacBook Pro and MacBook Air
Apple has traditionally released its new MacBook Pro models in the fall. Therefore, a MacBook Pro with the M5 chip this year wouldn’t be surprising. However, according to information long reported by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is targeting early 2026 for the MacBook Pro with the M5 chip.
When the MacBook Pro series with the M5 chip launches, it will be offered in the same 14-inch and 16-inch sizes as the current industrial design. In line with Apple’s typical strategy, the devices will come with three different chip options:
- M5
- M5 Pro
- M5 Max
Not only the MacBook Pro but also the M5 MacBook Air are expected to be unveiled in early 2026. This could coincide with the M4 model’s release in February or March of this year. The M5 MacBook Air is expected to retain the basic design of the M4 model and come in 13-inch and 15-inch sizes.
Apple is likely to have other M5-powered Mac models ready in late 2025 or early 2026. The Mac mini and iMac are considered the most likely candidates. However, reports about M5-powered Macs have so far focused primarily on Apple’s laptop lineup.
