When will Volkswagen’s affordable electric car arrive?

The Volkswagen Group continues to lead the transformation to electric vehicles (EVs) in the automobile market. VW’s new EV model, the ID.1, will be offered with a starting price below 20,000 Euros (approximately 700,000 TL). This development is part of the effort to expand accessibility and affordable options for electric vehicles.

Volkswagen’s ID.1 to launch in 2027

VW has announced that the ID.1 will be released in 2027. It will be VW’s electric car in the minicar segment, replacing the current e-Up model. Among four different designs, the ID.1, aiming to open a new chapter in the electric vehicle market with improved performance and innovative technology, will be selected.

With a starting price below 20,000 Euros, the ID.1 will increase overall accessibility to electric vehicles and target a wider audience. This pricing strategy has the potential to create a broader customer base for electric vehicles.

VW may partner with Skoda to reduce the development costs of the ID.1. This joint development approach will help lower the production costs of electric vehicles and pave the way for more affordable electric cars.

A possible partnership with Renault is also on the agenda for VW. Renault plans an electric minicar for the future Twingo model, and VW may consider collaborating with Renault on affordable electric vehicle platforms.

Before ID.1, VW will release the ID.2 subcompact hatch model around 2026. The ID.2, which could be named Polo, will be offered starting from around 25,000 Euros. Previewed with the ID.2 all concept, ID.2 will compete with Tesla’s affordable EV, planned to be launched around 2025.

The launch of the ID.1 and ID.2 will further strengthen the Volkswagen Group’s position in the electric vehicle market. VW will use these models to attract new customers and steer existing customers toward electric vehicles.
