We often complain about traffic rule violations in Turkey, frequently comparing them to Germany. However, from those who flash their headlights to annoy others, to those who park in disabled spots, a new survey shows that Germans are not so innocent on the road. A recent survey reveals why German drivers frequently violate traffic rules, and the results are quite interesting. Here are the traffic violations committed by Germans and their reasons…
A survey conducted with German drivers reveals numerous traffic violations
A survey conducted by AutoScout24 with over 1,000 German drivers shows that nearly two-thirds of drivers regularly violate traffic rules intentionally. The research reveals that drivers most often exceed speed limits and fail to signal when turning.
63% of German drivers admitted to driving faster on roads without speed cameras or speed controls. Additionally, 46% neglect to signal when turning. Such traffic violations are among the most common causes of accidents. According to the survey, one in three drivers regularly violates rules by not yielding to other vehicles or maintaining a safe following distance, increasing the risk of accidents.
A significant portion of drivers violate some traffic rules because they find them unnecessary. 43% of respondents said they intentionally break traffic rules because they find them meaningless. Daily stress and time pressure lead more than half of the drivers to break the rules.
Here are the survey results showing which traffic rules German drivers violate:
- 37% park in no-parking zones when they need to park for a short time.
- 36% flash their headlights to attract attention to other drivers who disturb them.
- 35% speed up to take a parking spot when competing for it.
- 29% get distracted and use their phones when they are busy.
- 21% park in disabled parking spaces when they need to park for a short time.
- 21% use bus lanes even though it is forbidden.
- 16% drive under the influence of alcohol, even if they are over the legal limit, if they feel fine.
Siegfried Brockmann, who conducts research on accidents, states that aggressive behavior in traffic stems from societal individualism (selfishness). “German drivers, even if they do not intend to harm others, try to gain an advantage for themselves by violating traffic rules. However, these behaviors can have serious consequences,” he says.
The results of this research are truly thought-provoking. Next time someone says there are no traffic violations in Germany, you can show them these survey results.
