Apple has shifted its entire focus to WWDC 2023, which will begin on June 5th. Consequently, there has been recent speculation about the tech giant’s new products. However, a new report has revealed an previously unknown detail about AirPods: why do they only come in white?
AirPods were supposed to have the same colors as the iPhone 7
A Twitter account called Kosutami, known for collecting prototypes, shared images of AirPods charging cases in various colors. According to the images, Apple had planned to release its first wireless earbuds in a range of colors, including purple, pink, red, black, and yellow, to match the color options of the iPhone 7.
This color scheme was intended to be compatible with the iPhone 7 lineup. However, the purple color option for the iPhone 7 was cancelled, followed by the decision to shelve all the color options for AirPods. This unexpected revelation has sparked curiosity among Apple enthusiasts.
According to the details shared by Kosutami, Apple had intended to achieve compatibility between the AirPods charging cases and the iPhone 7 colors. For those who may not recall, the iPhone 7 was available in Jet Black, Gold, Black, Red, and Rose Gold. The purple version of the smartphone was cancelled, and various design decisions were made.
During the Design Verification Test (DVT) and Production Verification Test (PVT) stages, Apple decided to cancel the AirPods color options. They chose to go with a single color without determining whether these color options met the expected standards.
Apple has never officially explained why they have only chosen white as the color option for AirPods. However, following this claim, it appears quite likely that the cancellation of the iPhone 7 colors and the purple version holds significance.
