Former Rockstar developer reveals the reason behind GTA 3 main character being silent
Former Rockstar Games developer Obbe Vermeij, who has worked in many games in the past, including GTA 3, shared the reason for Claude’s decision not to speak on social media. According to Vermeij’s statement, this choice was primarily a result of the need to ease the workload on the development team and the sound department. According to Vermeij, the sound team was already overstretched with the current duties, and providing the voice for Claude would present an additional burden.
GTA 3, released in 2001, caused a significant leap forward in the gaming world with its open world design and immersive gameplay. The decision to have a silent protagonist was a pragmatic one at the time, allowing the development team to focus resources on other aspects of the game. The success of GTA 3 paved the way for subsequent installments of the series, each of which sought to surpass its predecessor in scale and complexity.
While Claude’s silence was a cost-cutting measure, the Grand Theft Auto series has since evolved to include fully voiced heroes with detailed scripts. Characters like Trevor in GTA V have become unforgettable with their expressions and distinct personalities.
