Apple’s new product, Vision Pro, is a significant opportunity for the Korean display panel industry. The brand will collaborate with various companies for Vision Pro’s screens. The crucial part will be handled by Sony and LG Display. Therefore, two giant screen manufacturers will work on a single Apple product.
Why is the price of Apple Vision Pro so high? Which component is expensive?
A total of two screens will be used in Apple Vision Pro, both inside and outside the device, with different specifications. The panels used outside the device will have OLED technology. The ones inside, on the other hand, will have “micro-OLED” technology, preserving the resolution quality at close distances.
The OLED panels on the outside will be manufactured by LG Display, a brand that has been producing panels for years with decreasing production costs. The cost of these screens, produced by LG, will be $30 per unit. However, the situation changes for the internal “micro-OLED” panels produced by Sony, which involves a significant cost increase.
As the name suggests, micro-OLED panels have more pixels in smaller areas, resulting in a significant increase in image quality. The Vision Pro micro-OLED panels produced by Sony will consist of two units in each device, costing $350 per panel. This means a production cost of $700 per device.
According to the latest data as of June 11 and sources from the display and securities industries, the production cost of Vision Pro is around $1,519. The product’s retail price is $3,499. Evaluating based on the cost price, we see that the micro-OLED panels produced by Sony cover half of the cost. This can be considered a reason for the high price of Vision Pro.
