As Microsoft continues to push users towards Windows 11, it is not forgetting to end support for older generation operating systems. Finally, Windows 7 and Windows 8 activation codes are banned from being used in Windows 11. This marks the end of free migration.
Microsoft Ends Windows 11 Free Upgrade Path From Windows 7 and 8
Since the launch of Windows 10 in 2015, Microsoft has been allowing users with Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 licenses to upgrade at no extra cost. However, this upgrade was also available for Windows 11.
Microsoft has finally pulled the plug on this unofficial upgrade option. In a memo sent by the company to manufacturers, it said that free upgrades from Windows 7 and 8 to newer versions will no longer be possible.
Tests by Windows users showed that Windows 7 and 8 keys can still activate the Windows 11 22H2 update. However, the new Insider or preview builds rejected the old keys.
This means that Windows 11 will no longer allow free upgrades with Windows 7/8 keys. However, it should be noted that you can switch to Windows 11 with a Windows 10 activation code.
The closure of the unofficial upgrade path means that users will have to purchase new licenses to upgrade to Windows 10 or 11. Note that older operating systems can create security and compatibility issues.
