Microsoft’s forthcoming artificial intelligence (AI) assistant, Copilot, is getting ready for its Windows 11 debut. We’ve had an exciting look into how the integrated AI, powered by Bing Chat, functions inside Windows 11.
A glance into Copilot’s capabilities
Windows Latest managed to access an early release of Copilot, although it wasn’t fully operational. This sneak peek, although short, offers a taste of what the AI assistant, envisaged to be much more than Cortana ever was, might do.
One example featured the user directing Copilot to activate Dark Mode—a command which the AI, in its current development stage, couldn’t execute. The AI’s response to a food-related query also gave a sense of its interaction style, resembling Bing chatbot’s pattern, with three main character types for responses embedded.
While this preview didn’t showcase all of Copilot’s promised capabilities—such as turning on multiple features at once or summarizing content within an email—the leak confirmed that Copilot will leverage a system of “action cards” to understand how the user interacts with the OS and provide smart suggestions.
Is Copilot ready for the spotlight?
Though the preliminary glimpses of Copilot weren’t overly thrilling, they signal continued development progress since its announcement. Microsoft had hinted at testing beginning in June, but no concrete news had surfaced until now.
Two glimpses of Copilot came to light recently: one via Windows Latest, and another over the weekend from renowned Twitter-based leaker Albacore, who noticed a non-functional, hidden Windows Copilot button in recent Windows 11 preview builds.
These leaks suggest that Copilot is inching closer to a preview release. However, we anticipate extensive internal testing before it reaches Windows Insiders. Given the AI nature of the feature, “surprises and mistakes are possible,” so the Copilot team will need to avoid any hiccups—even during testing—to prevent damaging user trust.
In the realm of AI assistants, a misstep may be embarrassing, but with an AI integrated directly into Windows 11, Microsoft needs to be exceptionally careful to avoid any mishaps.
