Unexploded WWII bomb found at Tesla’s Berlin Gigafactory
While expanding the Gigafactory in Berlin, Tesla encountered an unexpected surprise—a 250 kg World War II bomb. This bomb is too dangerous to move and will be detonated in place. Authorities plan to neutralize the bomb between 7 AM and 3 PM on Saturday.
Tesla’s expansion plans for the Berlin Gigafactory have already faced various challenges. The local community in Grünheide voted against the expansion due to the need to clear more than 100 hectares of forest. Activists have occupied the forest to halt the expansion. The discovery of this old bomb has further complicated the situation.
During the detonation, a safety zone of approximately one kilometer will be established, and two main roads will be closed. However, the A10 highway and RE1 railway line will remain open. Tesla will temporarily halt weekend production at the Berlin factory to address the bomb issue. Protesters occupying the forest have already been informed to vacate the area.
In many parts of Europe, old war munitions are often discovered during construction work. Therefore, searches for old munitions are ongoing in Tesla’s expansion area. Currently, Tesla only produces the Model Y at Gigafactory Berlin, but the company aims to expand the factory to support future vehicle production.
