Social media platform X has once again found itself at the center of controversy after an allegedly inappropriate video featuring rapper Drake went viral, raising concerns about the platform’s ability to police sexually explicit content.
X rises to number one on the App Store due to Drake video
After Taylor Swift, with the Drake incident, X has come under the spotlight for the second time in two weeks with explicit images of a celebrity. The scandal has propelled X to the number one spot among free apps on the App Store.
The surge in downloads comes on the heels of another incident in which fake, AI-generated sexually explicit images of singer Taylor Swift circulated on the platform.
X’s owner Elon Musk took to social media to boast about the app’s newfound popularity and did not raise concerns about the platform’s handling of sensitive content. Musk’s statements were made in a defiant manner in the face of criticism directed at their company.
In response to the controversy, X reiterated its commitment to providing a safe and respectful environment for all users and announced a zero-tolerance policy for non-consensual sharing of sexually explicit images. The company claims to have taken action on thousands of posts that violate its policies and promises to continue to actively monitor the situation to promptly remove offending content.
However, despite these assurances, concerns remain about X’s ability to effectively moderate content. Users have been able to find several posts containing the alleged Drake video, some with millions of views, even after the company claimed to have taken action. This raises questions about the adequacy of X’s moderation efforts.
Musk, in particular, has faced criticism for reducing the teams responsible for content moderation and security features at X shortly after he acquired the company in 2022. What do you think? Please don’t forget to share your thoughts with us in the comments section.
