Brazil decided to ban the X (or Twitter) application last week. As a result, Bluesky, developed by Twitter founder Jack Dorsey, quickly gained significant traction. It gained over 1 million new users following the X ban.
Bluesky Gains 1 Million Users with X’s Brazil Ban
Brazil decided to completely suspend X’s operations in the country at the end of August. The ban came after the platform reinstated accounts supporting former President Jair Bolsonaro.
X’s inaccessibility in Brazil has led users to seek alternative social media applications. Bluesky, launched earlier this year, made waves as a potential challenger to the dominance of platforms like Twitter. The ban in Brazil has further fueled the app’s resurgence in popularity.
Bluesky’s blue and white design echoes the X interface. While still significantly smaller than giants like Threads and X, it doubled its user base last month. It is estimated to have reached over 7.79 million users worldwide.
A Bluesky spokesperson expressed excitement about welcoming users seeking alternatives after the events in Brazil. The platform reiterated its commitment to its founding principles of openness, transparency, and being human-centric.
It remains to be seen whether Bluesky can maintain its momentum or if users will return to larger platforms like X. However, for now, it has clearly benefited from X’s ban in Brazil.
