Microsoft’s efforts to unify console and PC gaming experiences under a single Windows-based operating system have been widely discussed in the technology world recently.
Old Xbox games may be coming to PC
Devices like the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally, which function as both a Windows PC and an Xbox game console, are fueling these speculations. The latest information added to this chain of claims and rumors comes from NateDrake, a well-known leak source on the ResetEra forum.
According to the source, Microsoft is allocating significant resources to make older generation Xbox games playable on Windows and ASUS ROG Xbox Ally platforms. “Old generation” games here include titles released for the original Xbox and Xbox 360.
The source speaks confidently of backward compatibility efforts being conducted behind closed doors. However, how far these efforts will go and how successful they will be remains unclear.
Microsoft’s previous backward compatibility program for the Xbox game library, although ending in 2021, had been a strong selling point for the company. Previous leaks regarding backward compatibility suggest that the solution could be offered via an emulator.
Considering the potential merger of Windows and Xbox consoles, bringing older Xbox games to Windows also means backward compatibility for the next-generation Xbox console, which is said to be the company’s own hardware.
