The possibility of Apple making a major numbering change in 2027 to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the iPhone has led to claims that Xiaomi will follow a similar strategy for its flagship series.
The Xiaomi 20 is on the horizon
According to industry reports, after releasing the iPhone 18 series in 2026, Apple may skip the iPhone 19 series and directly announce the iPhone 20 series in 2027. This opens the door to a Xiaomi move that will reshape competition in the technology world.
It is rumored that Xiaomi will follow a strategy parallel to Apple, skipping the Xiaomi 19 series. Xiaomi has previously made a similar leap in its flagship phone series. The brand completely skipped the Xiaomi 16 series and directly launched the Xiaomi 17 series (Xiaomi 17, 17 Pro, and 17 Ultra).
Company President Lu Weibing explicitly stated that the main goal of this move was to position itself directly under the same number as Apple’s iPhone 17 series. This strategic move aimed to demonstrate Xiaomi’s significant leap in premium features and position it as a direct competitor to Apple in the market.
Now, in response to a potential iPhone 20 launch to celebrate Apple’s 20th anniversary, it’s being suggested that Xiaomi will skip the Xiaomi 19 series. According to a new report, Xiaomi intends to launch the Xiaomi 20 series simultaneously with Apple in 2027.
While there’s no definitive evidence to support these claims, Xiaomi’s past jump from the 16 to the 17 series suggests such a strategic leap is possible.
Even though Xiaomi doesn’t have a major anniversary like Apple in 2027, this calculated jump maintains brand consistency and solidifies its competitive position directly against the iPhone. This completely eliminates the perception of Xiaomi lagging behind Apple in naming conventions.
