Xiaomi, one of the best-selling technology brands in Europe, has received an unexpected ban. Finland’s three major GSM operators announced the suspension of sales of Xiaomi smartphones. So why is the Chinese manufacturer being protested in Finland?
Finland’s GSM companies suspended Xiaomi phone sales
Three major Finnish mobile operators have started a boycott of Xiaomi. The reason given was that Xiaomi continued to sell to Russia during the invasion of Ukraine. Stating that all companies have withdrawn from Russia, GSM operators stated that they are concerned that Xiaomi will remain in the background in this regard.
Telia, DNA and Elisa, the three largest operators in Finland, think that Xiaomi does not comply with Europe’s strategic decisions. These companies will no longer sell new Xiaomi devices in their stores. Once the existing stocks are finished, Xiaomi phones will not be renewed.
Speaking on the subject, DNA CEO Sami Aavikko stated that they are not satisfied with Xiaomi’s attitude towards Russia. Elisa, another company, will narrow the range of Xiaomi products it offers for sale.
However, it should be noted that Xiaomi can continue to sell both officially and through distributors. Since there is no official ban from the Finnish government, the company’s activities in the country will continue.
Two retail companies said that they will continue to sell Xiaomi phones “for now” as there is no EU-wide ban. Let us remind you that there has been no official statement from Xiaomi yet after the ban of GSM operators.
