Smartphone manufacturers build their own interface on top of the pure Android operating system. For example, Xiaomi phones feature the Android-based MIUI interface. According to new reports, the Chrome interface changed after the update on Xiaomi models. The new malware discovered is thought to be an ad attack in the Chrome app.
Xiaomi, Redmi and Poco models face Mintnav threat
Some Xiaomi users posting on social media claimed to have discovered malware pre-installed on their devices. Many users said that Chrome’s home page was replaced with malware called Mintnav.
There is no detailed information about Mintnav yet. But it is thought to be malware that attacks browsers, especially Chrome. It is unclear how it uses user data, but it can attack ads by ignoring user settings.
It is unclear how the malware got into Xiaomi phones. Some suspect that it was pre-installed and then activated via an update. It is unclear which models are affected, but Poco and Redmi users are also affected.
Despite user reports, Xiaomi has not yet commented. Security experts say users should check their Chrome settings and reset the app if they see a home page with Mintnav. You can also completely reset your device to eliminate the risk.
A similar report emerged last year. It was reported that hackers who attacked Xiaomi devices in two different ways were able to access financial account information thanks to the vulnerability in MIUI.
