Although Xiaomi’s decision to produce a car was initially met with skepticism, the team led by company founder Lei Jun defied all criticism with the SU7. With its Porsche Taycan-like design, record-breaking aerodynamics, and aggressive pricing, the SU7 set a record by securing over 50,000 firm orders in its first 27 minutes on sale. Not only was the SU7 a sales success, it also proved its performance prowess by setting one of the fastest production electric sedan lap times on Germany’s legendary Nürburgring. Now, with the Xiaomi YU9, the Chinese company will challenge its competitors.
Leaked photos of the Xiaomi YU9 demonstrate that Xiaomi isn’t just pursuing a “one-time wonder” but is determined to become a long-term player in the automotive industry. Unlike the SU7’s sporty sedan form, the prototype depicts a muscular and imposing full-size SUV, aimed at large families and long journeys.
What will the Xiaomi YU9 be like?
The most striking claim about the YU9 concerns its powertrain. Unlike the all-electric (BEV) infrastructure used in the SU7, Xiaomi may utilize “Range-Extender Hybrid” (REEV) technology in the YU9. This is being interpreted as a surprising strategy shift by many in the industry.
So, what does this technology mean? Unlike traditional hybrids or plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), the electric motors in the REEV system always drive the wheels. The vehicle’s small-displacement gasoline engine never directly powers the wheels. Instead, it acts as a generator, charging the battery. This way, the driver always experiences the quiet, smooth, and instantaneous torque of an electric car, completely eliminating the stress of finding a charging station and “range anxiety.” When the battery drops below a certain level, the gasoline engine automatically kicks in to charge the battery, allowing the journey to continue uninterrupted.
This move demonstrates that Xiaomi is targeting users in regions like China, where charging infrastructure is not yet fully developed, across a vast geography.
Competitive Specifications
According to industry rumors, Xiaomi is setting ambitious targets for the YU9 that will put it a step ahead of its competitors:
- Impressive Range: The vehicle is expected to offer an electric range of over 200 kilometers. With the addition of the gasoline engine, the total range is expected to approach 1,500 kilometers. This figure could make the vehicle one of the longest-range models in its class.
- 800V Fast Charging Architecture: This cutting-edge technology, also used in the SU7, will also be featured in the YU9. This architecture allows the battery to charge from 10% to 80% in a very short time, such as 15-20 minutes, at compatible DC fast charging stations.
- Spacious Interior: The YU9 is expected to be offered in both six- and seven-seat versions, following a popular formula in the Chinese market. This positions it directly against strong competitors like the Geely Galaxy L9 and the upcoming BYD Sealion 07 (or similar models).
While Xiaomi’s rapid rise in the automotive industry has excited car enthusiasts worldwide, especially in Turkey, the company is taking cautious steps for now. The brand’s primary goal is to solidify its position in its home market, China, the world’s largest automobile market. There are no official plans or timetables yet for Xiaomi’s expansion into markets like Europe, Australia, or Turkey.
However, one thing is certain: the Xiaomi YU9 (or its eventual name) is not just a new SUV. This vehicle represents a tech giant’s unwavering ambition, strategic acumen that can adapt to market needs, and a desire to rewrite the established rules of the automotive industry. This impressive fusion of technology and the automotive world is a clear sign that many more surprises await us in the coming years.
