YouTube is expanding AI-powered age verification system!

Ana sayfa / News

YouTube began rolling out its AI-powered age verification app, which it launched in August, to a wider user base this week. YouTube announced in July that it would begin using AI to identify viewers under the age of 18. While initially reportedly limited to a “small group” of users, it was later announced that the app would expand to a wider audience. Here are the details.

To determine whether a viewer is under 18, YouTube uses various signals, such as account age and viewed content. YouTube explains:

“Our age estimation model uses various signals, such as YouTube activity and account lifetime. If we determine that you are under 18, you will be notified. As always, if you believe our age estimation model is incorrect, you will have the option to verify your age (with a government-issued ID, selfie, or credit card).”

If an account is marked as under 18, YouTube implements a number of restrictions:

While YouTube’s AI-powered age verification rollout launched in mid-August, it has gained significant momentum in the past day. Just on Reddit’s r/youtube page, numerous reports have surfaced of users experiencing account restrictions since September 24th. This is particularly striking considering that very few users were previously affected by these restrictions.

Users whose accounts have been restricted will see a pop-up message in the mobile/tablet app or web video player stating that their account settings have changed and that they need to verify their age.
