YouTube has managed to attract millions of users with its Music app. The application, which offers many features within the scope of its premium subscription, is preparing to make one more service paid. The free background listening experience, which was tested in Canada, has ended.
YouTube Music will only support background listening for Premium members
YouTube Music is rolling back the free feature it tested in Canada. Since 2021, users have been able to listen to songs in the background even if the screen or YouTube Music was turned off. However, starting July 8, the free background listening option will end.
YouTube Music informed via email that this experience will not be extended to more countries. Of course, it should be reminded that Premium members can listen to radio/music in the background when the screen or app is closed.
Non-Premium users will only be able to listen to music and playlists when the app is open. Playback will stop if users switch to another app or lock their phone screen.
Ads will continue to be displayed. Users will also be able to listen to music by adding to the list instead of shuffling. In other words, YouTube’s recommendation algorithm will not play different song all the time. Features like playlist suggestions and Samples will continue to be free.
YouTube Premium subscription is also required for background listening and integration with Apple CarPlay / Android Auto. These features are currently available to all users on Spotify.
