YouTube has begun a new test phase to reshape search results with AI. The company is testing a nearly full-screen “AI-Powered Search Results” feature for video search results on its mobile app with limited users.
YouTube to introduce new AI feature
The new interface presents videos and content descriptions related to the search topic, which is a departure from the traditional video listing format.
YouTube says that this new system combines clips from videos created by content creators with the help of AI and adds relevant descriptions.
For example, when a user searches for “best beaches in Hawaii,” the AI highlights clips about the best snorkeling spots and volcanic beaches. This content is accompanied by descriptions and more suggested videos.
The new format is currently being tested only with YouTube Premium users in the US. The test is only activated for searches related to topics such as “shopping, travel, or things to do in a specific place.”
Users can participate in the test by manually enabling the feature at youtube.com/new . The test process is only available on the Android and iOS apps; the desktop version is not included.
In addition, the AI-powered chat tool that appears below YouTube videos is also being opened to more users. The company announced that this feature will soon be available to non-Premium users in the US. The tool allows users to ask questions about the video being watched, get information about the content, or direct users to suggested content.
YouTube has recently been taking steps to increase the use of AI in search and content discovery. Whether the new systems will become permanent will be determined by user feedback and test results.
