YouTube is testing a Community Notes feature where viewers can provide additional information about videos
YouTube is working on a new feature called Community Notes, which can provide additional information and context below videos. The feature is specifically aimed at combating misinformation and helping users better understand content.
YouTube is launching this new feature on mobile devices in English in the US. During the trial, a limited number of users will be invited to write notes, and they will need to have an active YouTube channel in good standing.
Through these Community Notes, users will be able to explain whether a song is a parody or whether old footage is presented as a current event.
The feature is being introduced in the run-up to the 2024 US presidential election, with the potential for misinformation to increase. With this new feature, YouTube aims to minimize the spread of misinformation on the platform.
During the initial pilot, third-party evaluators will assess the usefulness and accuracy of the notes. The feedback will be used to train YouTube’s systems.
Acknowledging that there may be some bugs in the pilot, YouTube says it is open to user feedback. Viewers will be able to rate Community Notes as “useful”, “somewhat useful” or “useless”. They will also be able to indicate why the note is useful or useless.
Based on this feedback, YouTube will improve the algorithm for publishing the notes. The algorithm will identify notes that are useful to a broad audience.
The system will continually improve as more notes are submitted and evaluated. In the meantime, YouTube will decide whether to officially launch the feature.
