YouTube’s direct messaging feature is returning

Ana sayfa / News

The world’s largest video platform is revisiting a method it has tried in the past to increase social interaction. The company has begun testing YouTube’s direct messaging infrastructure again, which will make it easier for users to share videos with each other.

Google aims to encourage users to spend more time on the platform. Currently, to send a video to a friend, you typically click the “Share” button, copy the link, or navigate to external apps like WhatsApp. The new feature will completely change this process.

With the system being tested, you will be able to share a video you like directly with your friends without leaving the app. This move aims to transform YouTube from a mere viewing platform into a social network where users can chat.

The new infrastructure will work with a special option added to the share menu. Users will be able to see their contacts or frequently interacted with contacts in this menu. This will allow users to send videos and chat over videos with a single tap.

This feature isn’t entirely new to the platform. The company launched a similar messaging feature years ago but removed it after it failed to gain the expected traction. However, changing consumption habits are making this feature essential again.

Competitors like Instagram and TikTok manage to retain users thanks to their robust DM (Direct Message) features. YouTube also aims to respond to its competitors with this new move. It’s not yet clear when the feature will be available to all users.
