YouTube is making some changes to its user interface to highlight video and channel content on its mobile app. Having recently made minor adjustments to its music app, the platform has now begun testing a refresh of its video interface. The update is being tested with a select group of users.
YouTube’s mobile interface is being updated
According to the details shared, significant changes are being made to the mobile video player. The video description is now located below the share buttons. The channel icon has been slightly larger, and the username is displayed instead of the channel name. Furthermore, the description text on the share and download buttons has been removed; these buttons now only display icons.
The changes aren’t limited to long videos. Some updates have also been made to the Shorts section. The like and share buttons on the right side have become slightly smaller. The interface’s brightness has also been improved.
In both these cases (both for regular videos and Shorts), the platform aims to make the video viewing experience more prominent. While some users support the new changes, others note that they look unsightly.
All these changes are part of YouTube’s strategy to shift the visual focus on the mobile platform to the video itself and the channel that creates the content. The final version of the interface, along with its timing and availability, will be determined based on the feedback the platform receives from testing.
