The fight between YouTube and ad-blocking extensions continues. Accordingly, YouTube users who installed ad blocking extensions stated that the platform showed a black screen instead of ads. This revealed that YouTube has switched to a new policy.
YouTube shows black screen for ad blocker
YouTube users sharing on social media stated that they do not see ads when they use ad blockers. Accordingly, they stated that they encountered a black screen for about 30 seconds before the video. After this blank period, the video starts playing.
YouTube has been cracking down on ad blocking software for some time. For example, since last year, it has decided to disable extensions for YouTube Premium. In this context, even though users are switching to Premium, many people continue to use ad blockers.
In response, last month YouTube introduced a new way to insert ads directly into videos. This made it impossible for blockers to separate ads and videos. While some blockers claimed new techniques, YouTube seemed to have found an effective solution.
Now it is trying to disable ad blockers by showing a black screen before the video. Users can still avoid ads, but they have to wait for the duration of the ad.
If YouTube rolls out server-side ads globally, it will be ahead of ad blockers. But this is a difficult process for the company to develop.
