OmniVision’s new 50 MP CMOS sensor is officially out, and it’s already making noise across both camera and smartphone circles. The OV50R40 isn’t just a numbers upgrade; it’s targeting real use in the upcoming DJI Osmo Pocket 4 and select flagship phones from Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi.

The DJI Osmo Pocket 4 has yet to make its debut, but we may already know what’s inside it. The OV50R40 lines up exactly with earlier rumors about a next-gen sensor being developed for high-end pocket and vlog cameras. Its 1/1.3-inch size makes it a sharp fit for compact devices looking to punch above their weight.

Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi are all expected to put the 50 MP CMOS sensor through its paces. Flagship Android phones from these brands may soon offer sharper imaging, 8K video capture, and smoother zoom thanks to the new tech.

This sensor isn’t just about megapixels. Here’s what OmniVision packed into the OV50R40:

    • 50 MP resolution with a 1/1.3-inch sensor size
    • 110 dB Single Exposure HDR
    • 8K video recording support
    • In-sensor zoom cropping for lossless detail

These specs suggest it’s ready to play both sides, action cams and high-end phones.

The Osmo Pocket 4 might still get its rumored 1-inch main sensor. Even so, the OV50R40 could show up as a secondary cam. That would give DJI more creative control without bulk, keeping it pocketable while raising quality.

OmniVision’s latest move puts pressure on rivals to keep up. Whether it shoots action, vlog, or everyday life, this sensor sets a higher bar. The spice flows soon.
