Satellite connection support will be offered with Android 14, which is expected to be released towards the end of 2023. The next key innovation in the smartphone industry will now definitively be “satellite link” support. Thanks to this support, it will be possible to communicate with phones even in places where the cellular connection does not work.
Android 14 will support satellite connection and partners
The purpose here will be specifically emergency messages in the first place and after widespread use, it will likely save thousands of lives every year. It has been announced that this infrastructure will be supported with the Android 14 operating system built in.
Hiroshima Lockheimer, one of the most important names of Google, announced on Twitter that satellite connection support will be activated in the next Android version. There will be satellite connection support in the iPhone 14 series, which will be introduced on September 7 with a 99% probability. For those who missed it, Ming-Chi Kuo spoke lastly and claimed that Apple had completed hardware tests on this subject. In other words, the satellite connection infrastructure of the iPhone 14 models is hardware ready. However, Kuo states that the launch is now left to the company or companies that will offer connections from space rather than Apple.
Stating that this opportunity will definitely come, Kuo does not speak for sure about the time. In the meantime, there is a possibility that the communication process from space will come to the iPhone 13 models. As it is said, the necessary infrastructure is also present in those models. However, Apple may exclude the iPhone 13 models in terms of satellite communication in order to highlight the new models.
According to a specialist in satellite connections, who spoke before that, Apple made an agreement with Globalstar, an experienced name focused on satellite communications for new phones. If this is true, iPhone 14 models will have a satellite communication infrastructure that can only be used in emergencies. Thanks to this infrastructure, it will be possible to communicate from space in places where phones do not receive, and thus many lives will be saved.
This system will only be used for emergency messages and will be limited to the coverage of Globalstar, which has recently purchased 17 new satellites. In addition to all of them, SpaceX and T-Mobile will bring internet from space to smartphones in the coming months.
