The end of the road for Windows 7, one of Microsoft’s legendary operating systems, has come. Windows 7 is as important an operating system in Microsoft’s history as Windows XP. Windows 7 was highly appreciated after Windows Vista, which received great criticism due to the problems it caused.

Microsoft ends Windows 7 extended security updates

W7 was supported by the company for 10 years. Then the expected end was reached and the support was stopped. However, this did not kill Windows 7 because the company continued to provide extended security updates for the operating system to corporate customers for a fee. As of today, this corporate support has also been stopped. Corporate customers will no longer receive security updates for their Windows 7 operating systems. So, without extended security updates, Windows 7 will continue to run, but will no longer receive patches for new and existing security vulnerabilities.

Windows 8.1, the operating system version that succeeded Windows 7, also hit its end-of-support milestone on Tuesday, almost ten years after it was released. Microsoft said it’s not offering extended security updates for Windows 8.1

Also, it is reported that the Windows 7 operating system is still installed on millions of computers. However, a clear number cannot be given on this issue. So, now companies also need to switch to new versions. Microsoft is currently working on the Windows 12 operating system as well as Windows 11. We even have a possible date for Windows 12.

As it has been revealed in the past months, Microsoft is switching to the “Windows Development Cycle” which will bring us a new version every three years. It is claimed that the Windows 12 operating system could be released in 2024. It was stated that Microsoft would not make a major design change with Windows 12. The company gave a major update every two years during the Windows 10 era. For Windows 11, it stated that this would drop to one major update per year.
