As we inch closer to Apple’s WWDC 2023 event, more information is surfacing about the company’s first-gen mixed-reality headset, rumored to be called the Reality One or Reality Pro. The $3,000 gadget has been the subject of numerous leaks over the past few years, and recent reports suggest a 2023 release date.
New charging port for the mixed reality headset
Apple’s mixed reality headset is expected to introduce a new type of battery and power tech. The AR/VR wearable will come with a portable battery, a design compromise for the first-gen device to avoid making the headset too heavy.
Reports reveal that the mixed reality wearable will feature two ports: a USB-C connector for data transfer and a charger port with a unique design. The cable that goes into the headset has a round tip, and a magnet allows attachment to the headset. Users will have to rotate the top clockwise to lock it in, preventing it from falling during use.
The external battery will be roughly the size of an iPhone but thicker, resembling the iPhone MagSafe battery pack. It will also have a USB-C port for recharging.
Expectations for battery life and additional power
The external battery is expected to provide about two hours of life, which isn’t surprising given the headset’s rumored M2 chip and dual 4K displays. Some speculate that Apple will allow buyers to purchase additional battery packs for extended use.
Various software experiences are anticipated for the new device, which may require more than two hours of battery life. For example, the headset might be used as an external Mac monitor, for playing games, streaming sports and videos, or holding video conferences. In such cases, at least one additional battery pack may be necessary.
Unanswered questions
It’s unclear whether the battery pack can be charged while using the mixed reality headset. If supported, users would be tethered to a power outlet, which is not an ideal mixed reality experience. It’s also unknown whether Apple will support third-party battery packs. More information about the mixed reality headset’s charging features is expected at WWDC 2023.
