In recent days, Apple, which hosted the WWDC event, introduced its new features for individuals with speech difficulties along with iOS 17. Here are the Personal Voice and Live Conversation technologies that will be introduced in the iOS 17 operating system…
iOS 17 to provide artificial intelligence support for Live Conversation and Personal Voice
As part of a preview of accessibility updates coming this year, Apple announced a pair of new features called Live Conversation and Personal Voice for the upcoming iOS 17. Live Conversation will allow users to write and speak what they want to say.
Personal Voice, on the other hand, is described as a technology that allows individuals at risk of losing their speech abilities to create and record a voice that resembles their own. Apple states that it is designed for individuals who may be at risk of losing their speech abilities, such as those recently diagnosed with ALS.
In a statement about the new features, the company said, “With Live Conversation on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, users can write what they want to say for it to be spoken out loud during phone and FaceTime calls, as well as in-person conversations. Users can also record commonly used phrases for quick interjections during live chats with family, friends, and colleagues. Live Conversation is designed to support millions of people worldwide who are non-speaking or gradually losing their ability to speak, including individuals recently diagnosed with ALS, a disease that progressively affects speech abilities over time.”
Using Personal Voice, users will be prompted to read a random set of text prompts to make a 15-minute voice recording on their iPhone or iPad. Artificial intelligence technology will then create a voice that resembles the user’s own voice.
The company mentioned that the Personal Voice feature can integrate with Live Conversation and be used during FaceTime calls and in-person conversations. Some analysts emphasized that these technologies could also be used for fraudulent purposes.
