Mozilla has announced that it will introduce extension support in Firefox for Android later this year. In a blog post shared by the company, it was claimed that Firefox will be the “only major Android browser” to support an open extension ecosystem.
Firefox’s Android app gets extension support
For the past few years, Firefox for Android has supported some popular extensions. However, Mozilla has announced that it will bring Firefox on Android phones to the same level as the desktop version. Thus, the open web extension ecosystem will also be available on Android.
To help kick-start the process, Mozilla is asking developers of Firefox extensions to optimize their desktop add-ons for mobile. The company also promises to provide guides, resources and community events to help developers make the transition as smooth as possible.
“There is so much potential to unlock in the mobile browser space. Mozilla wants to provide developers with the best support we can to ensure they are equipped and empowered to build modern mobile web extensions,” said Mozilla.
Developers can start testing Firefox extensions for Android using Mozilla’s builds. Users will also be able to start using these extensions on Android as developers optimize their desktop versions.
While no firm update date has been set for the open extension ecosystem, Mozilla has said that support will be available by the end of 2023. More details are expected to be announced next month and developers are expected to bring their extensions to mobile.
