As generative AI tools like ChatGPT grow in popularity, rumors have emerged that Apple is working on its own AI product and that some form of “Apple GPT” AI robot may be released in the future. So how far have developments on this issue progressed so far? At what stage is Apple and when will such artificial intelligence come to light?
Progress on Apple GPT
John Giannandrea , head of artificial intelligence at Apple , leads the development of large language models within Apple, and Giannandrea reports directly to Apple CEO Tim Cook. Giannandrea founded a team working on conversational artificial intelligence four years ago, and work has accelerated since then. For several months, Apple has been testing an “Apple GPT” that could compete with ChatGPT.
According to famous analyst Mark Gurman, working on artificial intelligence is a priority for Apple; The company is designing an “Ajax” framework for large language models . Apple has a built-in chatbot that some engineers refer to as “Apple GPT.” However, it is not certain that Apple will use this naming for its consumer product. So, what is the function of this Apple GPT used by Apple employees ?
Apple employees need special permission to use the chatbot, and this AI is not used to develop new product features for customers. It is used to prototype the product and can answer questions about the data used to train it. This AI is said to be more capable than the previous generation ChatGPT 3.5 and has been trained on over 200 billion parameters.
Because training language models requires a lot of hardware, Apple is said to spend millions of dollars a day on conversational AI research. Analyst Jeff Pu claims that Apple will have some form of generative AI feature on the “iPhone” and iPad by late 2024, when iOS 18 will be released.
Pu said in October that Apple was building several hundred AI servers in 2023, with more coming in 2024. Apple will reportedly offer cloud-based AI and a combination of AI with on-device processing.
