Valve, the owner of Steam, has announced a new policy regarding the use of AI in games featured on the platform. With this new regulation, the company will require developers to provide detailed explanations of how they use AI technology on their Steam pages.
According to Valve’s new policy, developers will now fill out an additional section in the content questionnaire when submitting their games to Steam. This section, called the “AI Description Section,” will allow developers to explain how they implement artificial intelligence in their games.
Steam categorizes the use of AI into two broad categories:
1- Pre-generated AI Content: Content created using AI tools during development will be reviewed by Valve to ensure it does not contain illegal or violating content and is consistent with marketing materials.
2- Live-generated AI Content: Content generated using AI tools during gameplay will require developers to specify the measures taken to produce this content, in addition to the requirements of the previous category. This structuring includes measures to prevent illegal content.
Valve stated that these explanations will be prominently featured on Steam store pages. Additionally, the company is introducing a new player reporting system, allowing players to report illegal or violating content they encounter.
Steam won’t take risks regarding AI
Valve’s spokesperson states that these changes will facilitate clearer publication of games using AI technology on Steam. Furthermore, only games using this technology for adult-oriented content will be permitted.
Valve acknowledges that AI technology is a rapidly evolving and legally uncertain area. However, the company emphasizes the importance of this step in enhancing developers’ understanding of AI usage under transparency and supervision.
Valve notes that these policies may be continually updated in line with evolving AI technology and legal regulations. The company will revise its policies as necessary, considering feedback from players and developer partners. What are your thoughts on this matter? You can write your comments in the section below.
