Last week, simultaneous raids were conducted on the French offices of the Chinese company Huawei. Senior officials of the company announced that they would cooperate unconditionally with the French security forces. The reason for the raids was determined to be allegations of financial irregularities and favoritism within the company. However, no concrete evidence of any wrongdoing has been found so far.
Huawei-France relationship
The Huawei representative in France stated that they have been actively operating in the country for over 20 years and have made every effort to comply with all existing legal regulations. However, while refraining from commenting specifically on this investigation, the company representative stated that they are confident of their innocence.
In 2020, Huawei began construction on a factory in France to produce wireless connectivity equipment, costing 200 million euros. It is expected that this factory will have an annual production of around 1 billion euros. However, many European countries have limited Huawei’s 5G connectivity networks for an indefinite period. This is due to the company’s close relationship with the Chinese government and the embargo imposed by the United States as a result.
Huawei’s deputy general manager in France, Minggang Zhang, stated that there were no changes to their plans and they aimed to open their factories in 2025. Zhang also mentioned that they invest over 80 million euros annually in France and highlighted the dynamism and innovation in the country’s technology sector.
