Apple has officially canceled its long-standing but secretive electric car project. The electric vehicle, also called Project Titan within the company, was expected to be fully autonomous.
The fate of Apple EV is uncertain
After a meeting on Tuesday morning, the Apple Car was canceled. This affected close to 2,000 employees on the project. Project Titan was first launched in 2014 with the goal of developing an all-electric Tesla competitor. Over the years, the project has undergone several leadership changes.
Apple’s board came under increasing pressure to assess whether this project really existed. But after nearly a decade of development and billions of dollars spent, Apple was still far from launching a commercial vehicle.
As part of the cancellation of Project Titan, Apple will lay off most of its employees in the coming days. Accordingly, it is possible that employees will be transferred to artificial intelligence and automotive infotainment.
Industry experts say Apple is struggling to attract and retain automotive talent. It is also known that many executives such as Doug Field have moved to rival companies.
It should be noted that Elon Musk was not silent about this news. In his post on X, he shared emojis showing that he was “sad” for Apple Car.
