Warner Bros. Discovery has initiated the initial preparations for Matrix 5. As you know, Matrix 4 Resurrections failed to achieve the desired success at the box office. Especially for Matrix fans, the latest installment in the series was a major disappointment. Despite this, Warner Bros. continues to have faith in the franchise.
Plot and director for Matrix 5 sequel
The studio has currently signed Drew Goddard for the Matrix 5 sequel. However, Lana Wachowski will still be producing the new film. Drew Goddard is particularly remembered for his success with the film The Martian. The accomplished director was also part of the writing team for the Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Alias, and Lost TV series.
According to a statement from Warner Bros. Discovery, Drew Goddard approached the studio with a new story for the Matrix sequel. As you may know, Warner Bros. was initially reluctant to continue the series after the failure of the fourth film.

However, although details have not been disclosed, Matrix 5 will introduce a new plot and new characters. It remains unclear whether core roles such as Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Laurence Fishburne, Hugo Weaving, and Jada Pinkett Smith will appear in the new film.
Drew Goddard, known for his focus on storytelling in his directing work, is a filmmaker with significant merits as both a director and a creative producer, as well as a screenwriter. He particularly stood out with his direction in The Martian.
It is not yet known how the director will approach the film based on the main storyline for the Matrix sequel. Especially since fans were not particularly satisfied with the direction of the story in Matrix 4. In this regard, both the characters and the story may undergo changes in Matrix 5. However, it seems that Lana Wachowski will be the main guiding force in shaping the direction of the story. Warner Bros emphasized in their statement the excitement of the team, particularly due to Lana Wachowski’s contribution to the project.
This indicates that Goddard may not have complete freedom in shaping the Matrix sequel. One of the most requested stories for the Matrix franchise, especially among fans, is the first wars between robots and humans, briefly explored in Animatrix. It is one of the most popular stories among Matrix enthusiasts.
What do you think Matrix 5 should be like? Would you like the new film to focus on one of the stories explored in Animatrix? We look forward to hearing your comments.
