The lawsuit filed against Microsoft in the USA has been concluded. The patent case, which has been ongoing since 2018, was decided today. The United States imposed a record fine on Microsoft for patent infringement. Here is the penalty amount determined for Microsoft and the reason for the case…
Microsoft will pay a fine of $242 million for patent infringement!
IPA Technologies filed a lawsuit against Microsoft in 2018 for infringement of patent rights. Microsoft, which allegedly violated the voice recognition technology used in IPA’s computer communication software and transferred it to the Cortana voice assistant, was apparently found unfair in the case. Microsoft, which violated patent rights, will pay a fine of 242 million dollars.
Wi-LAN subsidiary IPA Technologies, which purchased the patent in question from the Siri Company, which Apple acquired in 2010, has held the rights to the patent since then. According to the decision, Microsoft, which allegedly used this technology for the Microsoft Cortana voice assistant, will pay a fine of 242 million dollars for this violation.
Claiming that they did not commit any violation and that the patent was invalid, Microsoft did not object to the penalty decision for now. However, it has been reported that the necessary objection applications will be made to the relevant courts very soon. There was no statement from Wi-LAN and IPA, the other party to the case.
IPA, which has also sued Amazon and Google in recent years, may actually be trying to protect its rights. However, Amazon, which successfully defended itself in 2021, proved IPA’s claims wrong. Google’s case is still ongoing. Let’s see what will happen to Microsoft?
