Google has announced new performance tools to address one of the biggest complaints of Chrome users: high memory consumption. You may have noticed that resource consumption skyrockets, especially with many tabs open. To address this issue, Google has added features to Chrome such as Performance Issue Alerts and an updated Memory Saver Mode.
New tools for Google Chrome against memory-hogging tabs announced
First, the Performance Issue Alerts feature instantly identifies tabs that are consuming too many resources. If a tab is draining your system resources, a warning icon appears in Google Chrome’s toolbar. When you click on this icon, you can quickly see the problematic tab and choose between two options: “Ignore” or “Fix now”.
“Fix now” allows you to close the tab and free up memory. With this feature, you can now fix high memory consumption issues as soon as you notice them. Google Chrome’s Memory Saver Mode has also received a comprehensive update.
First introduced in 2022, this mode temporarily freezes tabs that consume too many resources in the background. With the new update, Memory Saver has become more flexible according to user preferences by offering three different modes: Standard, Balanced and Advanced.
Standard mode automatically manages tabs based on the system’s resource needs. Balanced mode gives you more control over your browsing habits and prioritizes your favorite tabs. Advanced mode conserves memory to the maximum by quickly closing unused tabs for maximum efficiency. This ensures that even with many tabs open, system performance is not compromised.
The new features can be activated by going to Settings > Performance from the three-dot menu at the top right of Google Chrome. Finally, the tools Google has added to Chrome will be a great relief for users who experience browser slowdowns due to high memory usage. What do you think?
