ChatGPT used to plan Cybertruck explosion
Las Vegas Sheriff Kevin McMahill stated that Livelsberger had asked OpenAI’s ChatGPT various questions to carry out the explosion. These included inquiries about the locations of major gun stores in Denver, details about the explosive Tannerite, and firearm-related information.
During the press conference, McMahill commented, “We knew that AI would one day have a role in all aspects of our lives. However, this incident marks what I believe to be the first case in America where ChatGPT was used in such a manner. It is undoubtedly concerning.”
Police also shared a six-page manifesto written by Livelsberger, which contained critiques of political and cultural issues and harsh statements against the Biden administration. The document also referenced his military service in Afghanistan and the traumatic events he had experienced.
Following the incident, OpenAI issued a statement expressing their concerns and emphasizing the importance of responsible AI use. The company noted, “Our models are designed to reject harmful instructions and minimize harmful content.” They further clarified that ChatGPT only provided publicly available information and issued warnings against illegal or harmful activities.
